Two of Galway’s public hospitals will come under increasing pressure if a proposal to close Roscommon County Hospital’s A&E department in a fortnight’s time goes ahead, a local trade union official warned this week.

Mayo General Hospital is short 12 junior doctors out of 80 posts, a situation which could lead to the axing of services in the future, most notably in the A&E department. The shortages are in the areas of emergency and medicine.

“People will die unnecessarily” was the grim message from chairman of the Roscommon Hospital Action Committee, as the group prepared to meet yesterday evening [Thursday] to decide on the next step in their battle to save local hospital services.

There is growing concern that the accident and emergency department at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe may have to close during night time hours because of a serious shortage of doctors.

Roscommon Hospital Action Committee has this week called for an independent inquiry into the Health Service Executive West for what they describe as “budgeting blunders” which left the HSE West needing €50 million in savings by the end of the year to remain within budget.

“Unfortunately the message is don’t get sick this winter” was the chilling warning from a local union official this week, following the announcement that cuts of almost €50 million are to be imposed across the HSE West region, which takes in both Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe, and Roscommon County Hospital.

Deputy Denis Naughten has welcomed a commitment by the HSE to upgrade the sterilising facilities at Roscommon County Hospital.

Despite recent claims the HSE has, this week, refuted all closure rumours for either Roscommon or Portiuncula hospitals.
